Ron Paul is a former doctor who has served as the congressman for Texas’ 14th district since 1997. His views concerning the limited role of government and his strict interpretation of the Constitution have led some to call him the “Intellectual Godfather” of the Tea Party. Paul was the Libertarian presidential candidate in 1988 and a Republican candidate in the 2008 race. In May of 2011, he announced his candidacy to run for president as a Republican for the 2012 contest.
