A Tribe Called Quest

A Tribe Called Quest is a rap group that broke new ground in the late '80s and early '90s, seamlessly infusing jazz samples into their songs, which were often playful, tongue-in-cheek affairs. Their albums showcased DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad on the turntables, while rappers Jonathan "Q-Tip" Davis and Malik "Phife Dawg" Taylor traded verses that that were often quirky and fitful. The group also included founding member Jarobi White, who later left the crew. Along with likeminded artists De La Soul, Jungle Brothers and others, they formed the Native Tongue collective, which promoted creative self-expression in rap.
