The irony of this Philadelphia-raised quartet being discovered by New Edition alum Michael Bivins wasn’t lost on R&B lovers, as Boys II Men, in the ‘90s, picked up where NE left off in the ‘80s. The group found stardom upon the debut of their hit single “Motownphilly,” which sent their 1991 album Coolyhighharmony to the top of the pop charts. (Member Marc Nelson left the group around this time.) Their 1994 sophomore LP II, selling over seven million units, would become one of the biggest-selling albums by an R&B act. Not to mention that BIIM helped open the door for the white R&B boy band craze at decade’s end, with ballad-heavy groups like Backstreet Boys.
