Before the man accused of murdering Jennifer Hudson's family stands trial, his lawyers have an unusual request: They want a meeting with Hudson herself.
Lawyers for William Balfour, charged with the 2008 murder of Hudson's mother, brother and nephew, say they want to speak to the 30-year-old singer regarding a text she allegedly sent to her mother on the day of the murders, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Defense lawyers say the content of the text could become relevant if Hudson is called to the stand to testify. At this point, the singer has not been named as a witness.
Balfour is the estranged ex-husband of Hudson's sister, Julia. Local police in Chicago say they've heard from witnesses that Balfour had been threatening to kill Julia and her family for days before the murders, and Julia herself has testified that she saw Balfour lurking outside her family home as she went to work on the day of the slayings.
Defense lawyers, however, argue that the police didn't have probable cause for arresting Balfour, who was breaking no laws when he was picked up at his girlfriend's apartment on October 24 2008, days after the murders. They also point to a lack of fingerprints or blood evidence.
Balfour's trial will begin in April. A ruling on whether to dismiss his initial arrest will be made on February 14.
