Since the premiere of the controversial trailer for the upcoming film Nina, based on a part of the legendary singer's life, several critics and fans have voiced their disgust in Zoe Saldana's casting. Now, weighing in on the hot topic is Meet the Blacks star Mike Epps, who breaks down why the actress has been getting so much backlash.
"The reality of the situation is that Netflix put out a real documentary of Nina that was really, really, real," he said. "It was really, really good and powerful. It touched a lot of people, and I think people were not aware and a few people were ignorant to who Nina Simone was and now to show her in a film after a documentary that was so good is what made it hard."
Continuing to explain his theory, the actor said a lot of people, especially the younger generation, may be oblivious to who Nina Simone is and this film may be their first form of exposure to her.
"A lot of people, when you watch documentaries, they don't even know the background... I think that kind of made the critics come out of the woodwork."
