Roll Up!: Passengers Can Now Carry Weed At LAX, But There's A Catch

Seems a little too good to be true.

For those who have elaborate ways off concealing their weed when traveling, the Los Angeles International Airport wants you to know you no longer have to try to stash your ganja in a plethora of socks or empty tampon applicators when entering their airport.

Earlier this year, LAX updated their marijuana policy stating that they will allow passengers to bring up to the state’s legal amount of marijuana, 28.5 grams, in their terminals. Here's what they have to say:

"While federal law prohibits the possession of marijuana (inclusive of federal airspace), California’s passage of Proposition 64, effective January 1, 2018, allows for individuals 21 years of age or older to possess up to 28.5 grams of marijuana and 8 grams of concentrated marijuana for personal consumption. In accordance with Proposition 64, the Los Angeles Airport Police Department will allow passengers to travel through LAX with up to 28.5 grams of marijuana and 8 grams of concentrated marijuana. However, passengers should be aware that marijuana laws vary state by state and they are encouraged to check the laws of the states in which they plan to travel."

It seems pretty legit. But there is a catch. Marijuana still remains an illegal substance under federal law. On Thursday (Sep 27), Transportation Security Administration (TSA) representative Lorie Dankers told ABC 13, "TSA's focus is on terrorism and security threats to the aircraft and its passengers. Whether or not the passenger is allowed to travel with marijuana is up to law enforcement's discretion."

She also emphasized that marijuana is fine to carry in the airport but once passengers reach the TSA area, which is run by the U.S. government, federal regulations are applicable. So, don’t just expect them not to pull you out of line if they find that good kush. If TSA contacts local police and they determine that you are carrying the state’s legal amount, passengers still need to be prepared to address any marijuana laws of the applicable area that they fly to.

Yikes. Well, LAX is the first airport in California to have an official marijuana policy but just leave it home unless you want to sit there as LAPD weighs your stash and you end up missing your flight.
