People Are Outraged It Took Two Years for the Cop Who Killed Tamir Rice to Be Fired

Many say Timothy Loehmann should have never been hired.

On Tuesday, Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams announced the two officers involved in the 2014 shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice will be disciplined. However, many people are furious the punishment is coming two years late and does not appropriately match the injustice of Rice's killing.

At a press briefing, Chief Williams said Timothy Loehmann, who shot Rice, would be terminated "effective immediately" and Frank Garmback, who was driving the cruiser that skidded to a stop near Rice, would be suspended for 10 days, reported the Associated Press.

Although Rice was shot for holding a toy gun, and the nation demanded Loehmann be fired and charged, he was only terminated on Tuesday because he wasn’t truthful on his job application. According to Williams, Loehmann failed to reveal that his former job with a police department in Independence, Ohio, had allowed him to resign instead of being fired for a dismal performance.

Garmback was suspended for 10 days for driving too close to Rice on the day of the shooting, which violated a tactical driving rule.

  • Loehmann's firing two years after the shooting outraged many

  • Not to mention, he wasn't even fired for shooting Rice

  • People have blamed the Cleveland Police department for hiring Loehmann in the first place
