Robin Thicke Slapped With Second "Blurred Lines" Countersuit

Marvin Gaye III follows siblings, files second suit against singer.

Marvin Gaye's family members aren't backing away from claims that Robin Thicke copied the late soul singer's music to create "Blurred Lines."

Last month, two of Gaye's children, Frankie and Nona Gaye, filed a countersuit against Thicke, and collaborators Pharrell Williams and T.I. in response to the "blue eyed soul singer's" preemptive maneuver to maintain copyright clearance of his song. Now, Gaye's adopted son, Marvin Gaye III, has followed in his siblings' footsteps by filing his own countersuit against Thicke, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Gaye III, the eldest of the singer's children, accuses Thicke of copyright infringement for allegedly stealing his father's "Got to Give It Up" composition, along with three other tracks. Legal documents state that Thicke's songs — "Love After War," "Make U Love Me" and "Million Dollar Baby" — "serve as examples" of cuts similar to Gaye's songs "After the Dance," "I Want You," and "Trouble Man," and are "wholly dependent for their very creations upon Thicke's brazen copying."

Although Gaye III claims the 36-year-old stole from his father more than once, his counterclaim only surrounds "Blurred Lines," and "Love After War." He also hasn't named song publisher EMI April or its owner Sony/ATV in the legal filing, like his siblings.

Provided that the Gaye family wins the legal battle, dispersing the money between family members could take some time.

As for Thicke, he admitted to being inspired by the songs in an interview earlier this year, but maintains that his multi-platinum hit isn't a carbon copy of the 1971 single. His lawyer has indicated plans to challenge the countersuit. is your #1 source for Black celebrity news, photos, exclusive videos and all the latest in the world of hip hop and R&B music.
