Box Office: The Lorax Steamrolls John Carter

Eddie Murphy's A Thousand Words also disappoints.

For the second week in a row, kids ruled the box office. Dr. Suess' The Lorax took top honors at the theater once again, beating out Disney's action epic John Carter for the number one spot, earning $39.1 million this weekend for a total of $122 million domestically.
John Carter, by comparison, grabbed only $30.6 million in North America and a total of $101.2 million worldwide. Sounds pretty good, right? Until you consider that the pic cost $250 million to make and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, possibly another $100 million to market, meaning it won't come into the black until it sells $600 million in tickets. In other words, not gonna happen.
The bad news trickled down to Eddie Murphy and his flick, A Thousand Words. The long-delayed film (it had been shelved for four years before finally being released this weekend) grossed a disappointing $6.4 million. Not a pretty picture.
Next week, The Lorax will try to hold on to the throne against Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum's 21 Jump Street reboot and Will Ferrell's Spanish-language comedy Casa de Mi Padre.
