2022 NAACP Image Awards: Meet the Nominees for ‘Outstanding Motion Picture’

Some of these films have already received high marks from industry critics.

The nominations for the 53rd Annual NAACP Image Awards are officially here. Each year the organization recognizes and celebrates Black Hollywood for its outstanding performances in film, television, theatre, music, and literature.

Some of our favorites in the industry have taken the esteemed honors home, including the title of “Entertainer of the Year,” “Outstanding Actor in Drama Series,” and more. This year will also reward films whose writing and the overall story impacted its viewers.

NAACP Image Award recipient Anthony Anderson will be hosting for the ninth year in a row for what’s sure to be a night of Black excellence. But before then, please be sure to check out the nominees for “Outstanding Motion Picture.”

  • Judas and the Black Messiah

    The Shaka King directed drama-history film follows Bill O’Neal, played by Lakeith Stanfield, sent by the FBI to infiltrate the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party to gather information on its leader Fred Hampton, played by Daniel Kaluuya.

  • King Richard

    This feel-good tear jerker focus on the story of  Venus and Serena Williams’ father and his quest to transform his two daughters into the decorated athletes fans know today. The film, directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and executive produced by the Williams sister, King Richard is already being regarded as one of Will Smith’s best performance to date.

  • Respect

    Legendary singer Aretha Franklin is immortalized in this biopic by director Liesl Tommy, starring Grammy Award-winning singer Jennifer Hudson.

  • The Harder They Fall

    British singer-songwriter and filmmaker Jeymes Samuel had fan’s ears tuned in, eager to know was to become of the Netflix western film They Harder They Fall after it was first reported that it would be an all-Black cast. There wasn’t much convincing left to do after the mentions of the first few stars, including Idris Elba, Jonathan Majors, and Regina King. Samuel’s experience in the music industry also shines through with the film’s score.

  • The United States vs. Billie Holiday

    Known for her incredible singing talent, Andra Day made her feature film debut playing the legendary jazz and blues singer Billie Holiday in the Hulu film The United States vs. Billie Holiday by Lee Daniels. Though both parties didn’t believe Day would be suitable for the part, the singer turned actress earned her first Golden Globe for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama.”
