Rep. Al Green Removed from Trump’s Congressional Speech After Fiery Protest
Rep. Al Green, (D-Texas,) was forcibly removed from the House chamber Tuesday night (March 5, 2025) after interrupting President Donald Trump’s joint address to Congress.
The longtime Trump critic made his stance known early in the speech, standing and shaking his cane toward the president, shouting “You have no mandate to cut Medicaid!” prompting a chaotic moment on the House floor.
The tension escalated as lawmakers erupted in a mix of cheers and boos, forcing Trump to pause. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., swiftly intervened, reading from House rules to restore order.
“Members are directed to uphold and maintain decorum in the House and to cease any further disruptions,” Johnson declared. However, Green refused to back down, remaining on his feet as Trump attempted to resume speaking.
Eventually, Johnson called for the House sergeant to remove him. As Green was escorted out, Republicans mockingly chanted, “Nah nah nah nah, goodbye.”
Outside the chamber, Green defended his actions, telling CBS News that he was “willing to suffer whatever punishment.”

“Whatever the punishment is,” Green continued. “I’m not fighting the punishment. This is about the people who are being punished by virtue of losing their health care. This is the richest country in the world, and we have people who don't have good health care. We've got to do better and now we're about to cut Medicaid, which is for poor.”
Green’s removal was just one part of a night filled with visible Democratic protests and pushback against Trump’s policies.
Members of the Democratic Women’s Caucus wore pink in opposition to Trump’s stance on women’s rights and family policies, while others donned blue and yellow ties in a show of solidarity with Ukraine—days after Trump and Vice President JD Vance clashed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a tense Oval Office meeting.
Meanwhile, a group of House Democrats revealed black protest shirts under their jackets. Reps. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) and Andrea Salinas (D-Oregon) wore shirts emblazoned with “Resist,” while Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Florida) sported one that read “No more kings.”
Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove, (D-Calif.,) took her protest a step further, walking out of the speech entirely. She later posted on X (formerly Twitter), “There’s only so much bulls--- a person can tolerate.”
