BET Awards 2022: 5 Reasons Why We Rock With The City Girls

JT and Yung Miami are nominated for 'Best Group'!

The City Girls have hit the music world hard over the last few years, showcasing their distinctive Miami sound while collaborating with everyone from Saweetie and Jhené Aiko to Ciara and Lupita Nyong'o. Nominated in 2019 and 2020 for the BET Award for Best Group, this duo is one of the first to break through without the assist of a Jay-Z, Lile Wayne or Dr. Dre, and we love them for it!

Nominated again this year at BET Awards 2022, here are five reasons why we rock with them:

  1. How They Broke Into The Biz

The City Girls broke into the mainstream when featured on Drake’s “In My Feelings,” which reached number one on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. But even though JT and Yung Miami were never credited, rap fans were so thirsty. They did their due diligence and flocked behind the newcomers.

  2. They Persevere Despite Real-life Setbacks

Shortly after releasing their debut studio album, JT, whose real name is Jatavia Shakara Johnson, was charged with aggravated identity theft and sentenced to 24 months in federal prison. Yung Miami, nee Caresha Romeka Brownlee, however, wasted no time. She promoted the record on her own, getting DJs to play the song in clubs so the album was set up to drop when her girl came home. Once that happened, there’s no stopping these ladies who took a setback and turned into an opportunity to show the world what they’re all about.

  3. Yung Miami is Made of Steel

While pregnant with her second child, Yung Miami survived a drive-by shooting when an unknown person fired shots into her car as she was leaving her Miami, Fla. Studio. Thank goodness she and the unborn child were unharmed. She later announced on Instagram that she gave birth to a daughter on gave birth on October 17, 2019 and named her baby girl, Summer Miami.

  4. They Introduced The World To “Twerkulator”

The duo’s unreleased track “Twerkulator” has been blowing up on social media ever since a popular TikTok used it as a backdrop for dance moves. Since then their Miami sound has rocked more than 160,000 similar videos on social media. While the record remains unreleased because of issues clearing the “Planet Rock” sample, the buzz on the streets is unstoppable.

  5. They About That Life "Period"

Since releasing their 2018 mixtape entitled “Period,” JT and Yung Miami have created a signature phrase: “period” is their word of choice to emphasize their point. The say it so much that even Cardi B said she feels the third member of the City Girls because she’s guilty of using the  phrase so often. Just another reason why we love us some City Girls...period.
