SHORT CUTS: Marley Doc Acquired

Posted Sept. 26, 2007 -- Palm Pictures has acquired all North American and U.K. rights to "Africa Unite," a Bob Marley family documentary “Africa Unite" by Stephanie Black, reports Variety.

The feature follows three generations of the Marley’s family as they take their first trip to Ethiopia for a landmark concert commemorating the singer’s 60th birthday. The film features rare footage of the late artist and many of his original recordings on the soundtrack.UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador artists Danny Glover and Angélique Kidjo appear in the film, along with footage of the 12-hour political concert attended by more than 300,000 people. “‘Africa Unite’ is a call to action catalyzed by Bob Marley’s musical legacy,” said Danny Glover, one of the film’s executive producers.

Palm plans a theatrical release this winter, followed by an early 2008 DVD release in time for February’s Black History Month. The film was produced by Black and executive produced by Rita Marley, Cedella Marley, Glover and his Louverture Films co-owner Joslyn Barnes.

Hall Hooks Up With Cedric

Regina Hall has signed on to star opposite Cedric the Entertainer in the comedian's family pilot for ABC. The show centers on a family man (Cedric) who has always been the proud breadwinner and has difficulty adjusting when his wife's (Hall) hobby turns into a multimillion-dollar enterprise.

Hall, who co-starred on Fox's "Ally McBeal," has appeared in such features as "The Honeymooners" and the "Scary Movie" franchise.

"Idol" Finalist Heads to Broadway

American Idol" alum Anwar Robinson is joining the national touring show of the Broadway musical 'Rent.' Robinson, a season-four finalist on the hit Fox reality competition, will play Tom Collins in the Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical when it hits the road on Oct. 15. in York, Penn.

"Lackawanna" Writer to Star in Lifetime Film

Ruben Santiago-Hudson, who wrote and starred in HBO's 2005 film "Lackawanna Blues," has been cast in Lifetime's one-hour pilot "Long Island Confidential." The show revolves around a detective (Alison Elliott) who returns to her Long Island roots and learns that it's hard to escape one's past. Santiago-Hudson will play her boss, Lt. Calvin Burke.
