Gabrielle Union recently attended Essence’s Street Style Block party and while there, she was asked to give the scoop on her personal style. Not one to disappoint, the Being Mary Jane star shared the differences between her and her character Mary Jane as well as her style icons.
“It changes every day,” she said about where she draws fashion inspiration. “Some days it’s Beyoncé, some days it’s Ciara, some days it’s Jamie Chung, Olivia Palermo, and sometimes it’s people closest to me.”
While Union isn’t afraid to bare some skin, her television character has a much more conservative style and with good reason, she said.
“She has a regular day job that she’s got to be delivering the news in a way that’s not distracting from the information,” Union said. “She’s definitely a fashionista, but it’s dramatically different than my own personal style. So all of Mary Jane’s clothes stay in Mary Jane’s closet and there have been a couple purses that have made it back to Miami though.”
It’s hard to believe that Union could commit much of a faux pas when it comes to her style choice, but the 42-year-old said that’s part of her evolution: trying new things without worrying about whether it’ll be well received by others or not.
“Evolving,” she offered as the word that defines her personal style. “And it’s all about freedom. The second I fall into too many trends or worried about the judgment or I want to please this group of people, I’m trying to please this group of people, it doesn’t feel free. It feels like I just put myself in a prison, so I evolve, it ebbs and flows. I get it right, I get it wrong, but by whose estimations? As long as I feel good and look good, I’m doing all right.”
