BET Awards 2022: 4 Times a Female Artist Took Home ‘Best New Artist’

As we count down to the BET Awards 2022, we’re looking back at some of the highlights, including unbelievable musical performances, celebrity guest appearances from stars across Hollywood, and award presentations and speeches. Ahead of this year’s show hosted by actress Taraji P.Henson on Sunday, June 26 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, We’re looking at five times a woman took home “Best New Artist.”

  • Alicia Keys

    Grammy Award R&B singer Alica Keys earned the first point for the girl’s team in the “Best New Artist” category after taking home the honors at the BET Awards 2002.

  • Jennifer Hudson

    The musical men of the industry dominated the “Best New Artist” category until Grammy Awards-winning singer and songwriter claimed it at the BET Awards 2007, winning the male-dominated group which included Corinne Bailey Rae, Gnarls Barkley, Lupe Fiasco, and Mims.

  • Keri Hilson

    Singer and songwriter Keri Hilson solidified herself as “Best New Artist” at the BET Awards 2009. Kid Cudi, Ryan Leslie, M.I.A., and Jazmine Sullivan were also nominated.

  • SZA

    TDE signee SZA was the last female entertainer to win “Best New Artist” after winning the title at the BET Awards 2018. GoldLink, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, H.E.R., and Canadian singer Daniel Caesar were also nominated.
