First Lady Michelle Obama will travel to Africa later this month with her mother Marian Robinson and daughters Malia and Sasha. They will visit Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa, and Gaborone, Botswana, during the June 21-26 trip, during which Obama will focus on youth leadership, education and health and wellness. The trip marks the second tied that the First Lady will travel abroad without the president. Last year, she visited Mexico and Haiti after the  devastating earthquake struck the small Caribbean island.

“This visit to two critical countries will underscore that the United States has an important stake in the success of Africa's many nations and underscore the historic connections between the American people and those who live on the African continent,” a White House statement said.  “South Africa is a vital global partner for the United States, as political leader and economic engine on the continent, and a historic example of democratic transition in Africa and around the world. Botswana’s enduring democracy, bolstered by its commitment to using its vast natural resources to invest in its people and grow its economy, models the potential for good governance, and strong institutions to advance prosperous and stable societies.”

During her trip, Obama will deliver a keynote address to a U.S.-sponsored Young African Women Leaders Forum in South Africa. The administration believes that the continent’s future will depend in large part on developing its future leaders, helping African women realize their potential and investing in the health and well-being of the children who live there.
