Find Out Why Spike Lee Is Not Boycotting the Oscars

The director clears up his stance on the Academy Awards.

Spike Lee isn't here to lead your boycott of the Academy Awards. While it's true the outspoken filmmaker, who shared his views on #OscarsSoWhite the other day, won't be attending this year's awards ceremony, it won't be because he's trying to make a statement. He just has a prior commitment.

"Feb. 28th, we'll be at the world's most famous arena, Madison Square Garden. I'm going to the Knicks game," Lee said Wednesday on Good Morning America.  "I'm not trying to lead a movement."
He continued, "Here's the thing. I have never used the word boycott. All I said was my beautiful wife and I, Tonya, are not coming. It's like, do you. I'm not going. My wife's not going. Everyone else can do what they want to do."
Lee isn't even joining the chorus of voices calling for Oscars host Chris Rock to drop out of his duties. "Chris Rock is a grown a** man," says Lee. "He's going to do what he wants to do. And I support either way."
Attend or don't attend, watch or don't watch, Lee thinks it makes no difference because by the time #OscarsSoWhite hits the award nominations, it's already too late. "This whole Academy thing is a misdirection play. We're chasing the guy down the field when he doesn't even have the ball," Lee said on GMA. "The other guy's high-stepping into the end zone. This goes further than the Academy Awards. It has to go back to the gatekeepers," he added, referring to film studios. "We're not in the room," he said. "We are not in the room."
Considering Lee was this year's recipient of the honorary Lifetime Achievement Oscar (it's worth noting that he blasted the Academy during his acceptance speech), it's hard not to see his absence as an act of protest, but we'll take his word for it.
