The Miss Teen USA pageant has come under fire after the crowned winner Karlie Hay was outed as a racist — but that's not the only thing wrong with the long-running event, as Chrissy Teigen correctly pointed out.
The swimsuit model and new mom has a major issue with the lack of diversity among the finalist of the pageant, and vented her frustrations on social media.
Teigen retweeted the announcement of the uniformly white, blonde, and blue-eyed finalists with a little commentary of her own, even before Twitter dug up the receipts on the ultimate winner's racist past, which only further proved her point:
Wow how can we choose from such a diverse bunch https://t.co/0a4JHbP465— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) July 31, 2016
Teigen's observation started a major debate on social media, with many calling for her to elaborate and perhaps drop some knowledge on the uninformed, but Chrissy wasn't having it:
It's fiiiiiine. Not their fault. I'm sure they are delightful women. Just funny. I'm not gonna write a think-piece on a damn pageant.— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) July 31, 2016
Though Chrissy made light of it at the time, hours later — after Miss Texas Teen Karlie Hay took home the top prize — Twitter pulled up some of her old tweets filled with the n-word, which actually turned the issue from side-eye to dead serious. Hay ultimately apologized for her past comments (which raised a few eyebrows, itself), but hopefully the Miss Teen USA organization will take Chrissy's comments and the following scandal to heart for next year.
Of course, this isn't the first time Chrissy has shared her views on a controversial subject. See what she had John Legend had to say about gun control with BET Breaks, above.
