Famed screenwriter, producer, actress and showrunner Lena Waithe is the cover star on the April issue of Vanity Fair magazine, and in it, she sheds some light on her rise to fame, the Time's Up movement and more.

One of the most outstanding excerpts taken from her cover story, however, remains her comments on her Master of None co-star Aziz Ansari's sexual assault allegations.

Ansari was accused of ignoring a young woman's verbal and non-verbal cues back in 2017 about feeling uncomfortable with a sexual encounter following a dinner date. The woman came forward and spoke on her experience, and the story has gone viral since.

Waithe took some time during her interview to stress the importance of consent, in relation to her friend's scandal.

"At the end of the day, what I would hope comes out of this is that we as a society... educate ourselves about what consent is — what it looks like, what it feels like, what it sounds like," she said. "I think there are both men and women who are still trying to figure it out."

Expounding on her point, she said that it is vital that, in these settings, people remain alert and conscious of one another's comfortabilities.

"We need to be more attuned to each other, pay more attention to each other, in every scenario, and really make sure that, whatever it is we're doing with someone else, they're comfortable doing whatever that thing is, and that we're doing it together," she added. "That's just human kindness and decency."

Elsewhere in the feature, the creator of The Chi talked about the difficulties she's faced being a Black writer in Hollywood and much more.
