Celebrities React To The Chicago Cop Convicted Of Murdering 17-Year-Old Laquan McDonald

Common, Ava DuVernay and more give their thoughts about the landmark verdict.

Yesterday (October 5), Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke was found guilty of second-degree murder for the 2014 fatal shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.

  • Van Dyke was also convicted of 16 counts of aggravated battery for the 16 shots he fired. For many, it was finally justice for Laquan after so much protest, corruption, and more.

When news of the verdict hit the Internet, many celebrities reacted to verdict. They too have been keeping up with case’s developments.

  • Van Dyke's bond was revoked and his sentencing is scheduled for October 31. He was led out of the courtroom on Friday in handcuffs.
Originally, the officer was charged with first-degree murder, but jurors were instructed on Thursday that they could also consider a second-degree charge. Van Dyke was the first Chicago police officer to be charged with first-degree murder since 1980.
