‘Black Panther’ Just Made Golden Globes History, And Twitter Is Going Crazy

A whole bunch of Black films, shows and stars got nods this year.

Congratulations are in order for the cast and crew of Marvel's Black Panther as the record-breaking film just made history, becoming the first comic book movie to earn a Golden Globe nomination in the Best Motion Picture – Drama category.

Terry Crews, Danai Gurira, Leslie Mann and Christian Slater were all on hand to reveal the 2019 Golden Globe nominations in both television and film.

In addition to earning a space in the most coveted category of the night, the superhero film also snagged two additional nominations in the categories for Best Original Score and Best Original Song ("All the Stars" by Kendrick Lamar feat. SZA.)

  • In fact, the category for Best Motion Picture - Drama is pervaded with #BlackExcellence as Black Panther is going up against BlacKkKlansman and If Beale Street Could Talk, directed by Spike Lee and Barry Jenkins, respectively. The list is rounded up by the Freddy Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody and the Lady Gaga-led A Star Is Born.

This major accomplishment sees Black Panther inch one step closer to the highly discussed Academy Award nominations that many anticipate will soon follow.

On a less positive note, neither the cast members nor the director of Black Panther, Ryan Coogler, were recognized for their work in the film, marking a clear snub by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Furthermore, on the television front, the FX original series Pose was highlighted for its massive success and effort, receiving nominations in the categories for Best Television Series - Drama and Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama (Billy Porter).
