After months of anticipation, Ava DuVernay’s Netflix original series chronicling the journey of the five men falsely accused of rape in New York’s Central Park is officially here.

The four-part series, titled When They See Us, was originally named The Central Park Five. The title change comes in an attempt to empower the five men falsely accused of a crime they did not commit 30 years ago.

The award-winning director recently tweeted about the new project:

  1. A press release for the highly anticipated series explained, “In 1989, the media dubbed the men ‘The Central Park Five’ and they were forever linked to that name. The new title aims to break them free from that moniker.”

Along with empowering the five victims who were falsely imprisoned, through a title change, When They See Us allows Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise the opportunity to tell their own story from their own perspectives.

The series will premiere globally on May 31, 2019.
