Legendary filmmaker John Singleton was taken off life support on Monday (April 29) after slipping into a coma as a result of an unexpected stroke.
While it shocked everyone, including Singleton’s family and friends, it caused a lot of reaction from celebrities who knew, worked or were inspired by his work. Some were all three, including Morris Chestnut and Angela Bassett, who both starred in Singleton’s breakout 1991 film Boyz n the Hood.
They, along with so many others, offered their thoughts and memories of John Singleton on social media. See what some of the biggest names had to say below.
Stars in the universe that burn the brightest, live shorter lives than others. And with their high-energy light, they transform all that basks in their luminosity. Farewell John Singleton (1968-2019).

I met @SHAFT6816 as a recently graduated first time writer/director embarking on his nascent film career. I will forever remember him fondly from our first meeting during the audition… https://t.co/nftANCeA8Q

John Singleton has been an inspiration and hero of mine since I can remember. He broke open the door for black directors and paved a way we are still building on. #RIPJohnSingleton, a true pioneer.
