Golden Globe Awards: The Blackest Moments Of The Show

Cynthia Erivo, Beyoncé, Jay-Z and more were in the building.

Tonight is the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards, and based in the lack of Black folk in the building, 77 years doesn’t necessarily mean progress. Despite the fact that all four of the Black nominees (Cynthia Erivo, Eddie Murphy, Billy Porter and Beyoncé) lost, there was some soul in the building.
Here are all the Black AF moments of the night...

  • Cynthia Erivo’s Drip

Harriet star and Best Actress nominee Cynthia Erivo revealed on the red carpet that she’s wearing $5 million worth of diamonds. She may not have went home with the trophy but she probably walked away with the most bling.

  • Black Folk Joy

There weren't many Black folks on the red carpet, so it’s no wonder Cynthia Erivo and Billy Porter looked ecstatic to see other kinfolk. Soak up some of that Black folk joy!

  • Ricky Gervais Calls Out Racism At The Golden Globes

The forever shady Ricky Gervais had a vicious opening monologue and he had no issue calling out the folks who vote on the Golden Globes — and are the reason so few Black folks and people of color were nominated. He said, “The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is just very, very racist." There were some laughs but there was definitely some truth in the shade.

  • The Legendary Eddie Murphy

Don’t call it a comeback, he’s been here for years. Eddie Murphy graced the Golden Globes for his sixth nomination (he won in 2007 for Dreamgirls). Although he didn’t win this year, we all can’t help but to bow down to the icon.

  • Tiffany Haddish Bringing a Welcome Dose of Comedy

The red carpet was pretty bland but Tiffany Haddish certainly brought some needed laughter. She always ready.

  • Bey and Jay-Z's Surprise Appearance

They weren’t on the red carpet but Beyoncé and Jay-Z were in the building in support of Bey’s nomination for Best Original Song for the song “The Spirit” from The Lion King. This was her third Golden Globe nomination.

  • Tom Hanks Recognized These Two Black Actors In His Lifetime Achievement Award Speech

Tom Hanks gave tons of love in his lifetime achievement award but we couldn’t help but notice the shout-outs to Denzel Washington (who he worked with in Philadelphia) and Barkhad Abdi (who worked with in Captain Phillips). At least someone was willing to recognize Black talent in the room.

  • Tiffany Haddish Being 'About That Women's Choice'

Tiffany Haddish’s reaction to Michelle Williams speech at the Golden Globes was all of us. Williams said, “I’ve tried my very best to make a life of my own making… and I wouldn’t have been able to do this without employing a woman's right to choose. To choose when to have children and with whom.” See Haddish’s reaction above.
Another awards show down. Let’s hope the Oscars (nominees are announced Jan. 13) will do better in the diversity department. But we won’t hold our breath.
