Today calls for celebration, specifically to raise a glass to one of Brooklyn’s most legendary rappers.

The late Biggie Smalls is being honored today (May 21) in a very big way. Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams has officially proclaimed that today, which also would have been the rapper’s 44th birthday, has officially been dubbed “Christopher ‘The Notorious B.I.G.’ Wallace Day.”

Adams presented the proclamation to Big’s daughter, T’yanna Wallace, as well as to longtime friend and rapper Lil’ Cease during an official ceremony.

“On his birthday, Brooklyn salutes one of our own, who has never been forgotten as long as his music plays,” Adams said during the ceremony. “His energy will remain and continue to inspire people throughout not only the borough of Brooklyn, but Biggie put Brooklyn on the map.”

The Borough President took some time to wax nostalgic himself, sharing that as a former NYPD officer, he used to “blast Biggie in the locker room of the precinct, to let them know that Biggie’s in the house.”

“My family appreciates this more than you can even know,” T’yanna Wallace said, proudly. “I know my dad really loved Brooklyn. He loved where he was from. Brooklyn, Bed-Stuy, ‘Do or Die,’ that’s what he always said.”

Tonight the celebration will continue, as part of Puff Daddy’s Bad Boy Family Reunion Tour, which kicked off last night at the Barclays Center (May 20). As part of last night’s affair, Jay Z and Mary J. Blige were special guests, joining the likes of other unbilled guests such as NasBusta RhymesRick Ross and Ty Dolla $ign. Other performers included Lil’ KimFaith EvansMa$e112 and French Montana. As part of the surprises that continued throughout the evening, Diddy was feeling relatively generous and threw a diamond-encrusted chain into the crowd.

If last night was any indication of how tonight is going to go, those that were able to actually get their hands on a ticket are in for all sorts of surprises, perhaps even a hologram version of the Notorious B.I.G. himself.
