DJ Quik Has More Comments About His YG Dispute

He's not letting this go.

DJ Quik has made headlines recently for his beef with YG. The legendary West Coast producer says he’s needs credit for the Still Brazy rapper's hit “My N***a” and during a recent interview with Billboard, expanded on the situation.

During the conversation with the mag, Quik clarified his series of pretty damning tweets about YG and Stampede Management. He does say he was responsible for fixing what was initially a “muddy” record.

“I pull the song up, clean it all up, put it through that SSL board — SSL is one of the best recording systems ever,” he explained. I made it really dynamic, cleaned it, did all the little stuff that needed to be done.”

Someone else apparently blended the track, however Quik takes credit for the platinum hit’s quality. He says it’s among the lineage of great work he’s done with legendary artists in the past.

“I took the time to give it the same treatment that we did with [2Pac’s] All Eyez on Me, the same treatment I did with [my album] Safe + Sound,” he continued. “I’ve spent a lot of money and a lot of years and worked under the tutelage of a lot of great producers just to learn those chops. Just to be giving them away for free because I’m not relevant anymore or because somebody wants to be a d**k and give somebody else my credit because maybe there’s a kickback involved? I don’t think that’s the way to do business.”

It’s uncertain why DJ Quik waited three years to begin speaking out publicly about the song as it was released in 2013. Quik did say the way everything transpired between him and YG made him more aware about how he now works with other artists. “It’s changed the way I do business,” he said. “I’m like a professor. I really know sound, if nothing else. I’m not walking up into a studio [from now on] without letters of intent being signed.”
