Desiigner Doesn't Want Us to Call Him a Rapper

What is he then?

Since Kanye West introduced Desiigner to the world, the public’s been trying to place him in a musical category.

It’s become a cliché for rappers now to claim that they’re totally different and no one is doing what they’re doing. For Desiigner though, he doesn’t mind being called a musician, just don’t label him as a “rapper.”

The Brooklyn native was recently the subject of Tidal’s DNA Series. Within the short video, Desiigner explains why he’s not a rapper. “None of my dudes I chill with are rappers. I don’t put us as rappers. We’re all artists,” he stated. “In the G.O.O.D. Music camp, we all come around and we show ourselves and present ourselves as artists only.”

Fetty Wap is another artist who distances himself from the “rapper” label. He told Angie Martinez last year, “I don’t necessarily call my music hip-hop, I just call it Fetty Wap,” he explained. “I’m a melody person. I make melodies and add flavor to it.”

Do you agree that Desiigner isn’t a rapper? What about Fetty Wap? Check out the full DNA Series segment below.
