Since acquiring a number of Wingstop locations nationwide, rapper Rick Ross has been heavy on his foodie game.
Now, with an announcement of his Checkers restaurant endorsement in a newly released documentary that also doubles as a campaign ad, he’s on an even faster track to taste-maker status.
In the nearly four-minute video, the Miami-bred MMG rapper describes life growing up on the streets of Carol City, crediting the city’s overwhelming impact on his career. Leading into the restaurant endorsement, Ross shares a story of his pre-boss days as a 13-year-old car-wash employee. Raking in only $30 per day while drudging 12-hour shifts, he said that he frequented Checkers even more than the McDonald’s spot right next to his job.
“For me being a youngster, and I believe I speak for my entire community, we all knew Checkers was more affordable,” he explains. “It’s the No. 1 hamburger in the game. The boss said it. The No. 1 French fries in the game.”
Twenty years later, he continues, he’s in so fortuitous of a financial standing that he can have anything his heart (and stomach) desires, and Checkers is on the wish list.
Aside from its tasty, affordable menu, the hamburger specialty joint is particularly meaningful for Ross's Miami pastimes, as he recounts memorable moments with close friends and family. “Buying back the block,” he also boasts the restaurant’s economic benefits for his city.
“What made me come back and buy Checkers, I had a lot of reasons,” he continued. “Providing jobs, investing back into the community, staying in touch with where you’re from. We can come back and say that a piece of this is ours. Carol City, the city of Miami, is going to be proud.”
The endorsement boosts the “Buy the Block Back” rapper as one of the most altruistic philanthropic front runners as well. In 2016, Ross paired his Wingstop connections to a scholarship program that would grant scholarships to youth in underprivileged communities. The grant would also become available to mentorship and other educational groups to abridge school drop-out rates as well.
With all that said, Rick Ross has definitely paid the cost to be the boss.
