In its early stages, Queens-bred femcee Nicki Minaj’s rise to rap dominance saw many collaborations alongside key players of the industry like Trey Songz, Young Money mates Lil Wayne and Drake, Sean Garrett, Diddy and, notably, Kanye West with her vicious verse for “Monster.”
But on another collaboration between Nicki and ‘Ye for her debut studio operation, Pink Friday, she shared a few fun facts on a particular track that she swayed him away from.
In a chain of tweets, Nicki recollected some of the singles from the album that she whipped up hooks for right on spot in the studio. The Kanye-assisted “Blazin’” was one of them, which she had to persuade ‘Ye onto after he had his eyes set on the Billboard Hot 100-charting “Right Thru Me.”
“Hooks I freestyled in the studio: ‘Blazin’,” she tweeted. “Fun fact: Kanye really wanted to get on ‘Right Thru Me.’ I had to beg him to change his mind.”
Sharing that her decision to remain solo on that track came from its personal touch for her, in hindsight, she would have given ‘Ye the feature after all. For the album’s earmarking “Moment 4 Life” single with Drake, Nicki also shared that there were originally two different hooks penned by her for the Grammy-nominated track. Not to mention, she said, she was the writer behind all of her bars adored by the Barbz.
“Did I ever tell y'all I wrote 2 [different] hooks to that song?,” she replied to a fan’s mention of “Moment 4 Life” via Twitter. “Yup. In addition to writing all my raps I wrote a lot of your [favorite] hooks too! Hooks you guys have grown to love that I freestyled in the studio: ‘Moment 4 Life,’ ‘Beez In The Trap’ ‘Did It On ‘Em,’ ‘Right Thru Me,’ ‘Roman’s Revenge’….”
With production on Pink Friday from respected hitmakers and melodists, she also name-dropped Swizz Beatz and Ester Dean for their assists on tracks like “Here I Am,” “Catch Me” and “All Things Go.”
