Sevyn Streeter Makes a Glorious Studio Return With ‘Girl Disrupted’ Debut Album

The Atlantic Records songstress will gift fans with the project on her 30th birthday.

An EP, a surprise single or even a feature from Grammy Award-winning songwriter and Atlantic Records singer Sevyn Streeter has become a treasured musical token for her fans over the past couple of years.

With her debut album originally slated for a late 2015 release, the “It Won’t Stop” songstress has graced her devout Street Team fan base with a few tracks, like the Gucci Mane-assisted “Prolly,” in its absence. But the releases only further anted up the anticipation for the release of her debut studio undertaking: Girl Disrupted.

Gearing up a fittingly titled Girl Disrupted Tour, Sevyn hit 18 cities across the U.S. and teamed up with media maveness Karen Civil for a tour diary special. But even while on the road, she’s given the project some much-needed TLC, perfecting every nook and cranny in preparation of its official release. Word on the Street Team now is that she’s dropping it on her birthday, July 7.

After BET.com caught up with Sev, it turns out the buzz is true, and she’s got an earful in store for the debut undertaking with some of hip-hop and R&B’s most gifted.

It’s been two years — what’s it feel like to finally be getting this project out there to fans?

It feels like it's long overdue, but the amount of time it took to make it, I wouldn't take that back for the world. I just care too much about what I put out. I just want the music to be right, and I feel like it's great right now. I'm happy that I'm able to give [fans] a gift on my birthday that meant a whole lot to me. I know they were upset that I pushed it back, but I always wanted to put it out on my birthday. It just made sense for me. Happy and good vibes all the way across the board.

You kept “Fallen” with Ty Dolla $ign (added Cam Wallace), “Been a Minute” with August Alsina, and I see some new names like Dave East and Dej Loaf. What was your vision for this project compared to previous plans for the album?

With the features, I just love collaborations — period. The record with August [Alsina], the record with Ty [Dolla $ign]  I'm just a fan of those particular artists, so that was a no-brainer. And for Dave, I think he did his thing. I'm a fan of his work and I love Dej Loaf. Literally everyone on the album I'm just a fan of. So, I think it's perfect to be able to collab with them. As far as the album then compared to the album now, my album title, Girl Disrupted, ended up coming to fruition way more than I thought it ever would. Before, I just liked the name and thought it was cool. Somewhere along the way of creating this album and getting to the end of it, Girl Disrupted is damn near what happened to me. I went through so much stuff during the end and in the latter part of creating the album.

I ended up parting ways with my management that I was with for five years and dealing with all types of  I'll be honest — depression, and just a lot. The song at the top of the album is called "Living [Without a Care]," and it speaks to that. It speaks to the dark times I went through and how at the end of it all, those things just make you stronger and wiser. Now, here we are with this album and I've been waiting a really long time to have my own album out. EPs are great, but I've been waiting a long time for an album. And I'm going to live in it and I'm excited about it. It's go season and I'm ready for it. I'm finally in a really great place: emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually. I feel like every song on my album reflects what I've gone through to get to this place. Whether it was dealing with being in love, being out of love then trying to love again. Or, me going through dark times and dealing with depression, but coming out of it a stronger person. Or moving past hurt, and realizing that it doesn't do me any justice to try and hurt that person back. It takes way more energy to be upset and be mad. It takes everything in me. I just feel like we're in a really great place and it's time.

If there’s any one thing you need the Street Team to take away from this album, what would it be?

My records speak for you when you don't have the words to say. This album is going to do more of that. My foundation for creating my music and songs is primarily for [the fans.] If I wanted to be consumed with myself and keep it to myself, I would never release music. I'd ride around enjoying it in my car and not release it. But, I think about them when I'm writing these records. I think about the things that they tweet me and DM me about what they're going through. That's in the forefront for me. Street Team and I  this is a partnership. This is a relationship. This is a companionship. We get each other, we understand each other. And for everything that we're going through, if they don't know how to put it into words, I got them. That's how our relationship has always gone. That's why I decided to give them this album on my birthday. Yes, it is a present for me because it's been a long time. But moreso, they've been very patient and have been some ride-or-die a** fans. They've stood by my side, so I want this for them.     ■
