If you couldn’t get enough of The New Edition Story’s Algee Smith as Ralph Tresvant, the original lead singer of the critically-acclaimed ’80s boy band, he’s giving you even more with his fresh R&B introduction on his debut EP, Listen.
The six tracks occupying the project are themed with declarations of allegiance and adoration for women everywhere.
Smith allows himself to experiment with different sound textures that add the perfect touch of rhythm satisfaction to the EP’s overreaching message. From its very first track, “My Kind of Beautiful,” he embraces reggae flavor for a Dutty Wine-worthy anthem of beauty positivity. The 22-year-old’s empowerment doesn’t just touch the surface level, it delves into a broader understanding of the needs of a woman in connections, relationships and even the bedroom. “Stressed Out” invites listeners to a relaxing but rhythmic vacation right through the speakers as he croons his idea of lifting the weight off of his lover’s shoulders.
As demonstrated by the project’s final track “Back to Love,” Smith knows how to make the most of a simple beat by exercising versatility in his vocal range and cadence. Such musical experimentation does justice to his expressions of appreciation for women.
"This body of work was designed to do a few things,” he said of the debut EP. “Bring back a message of love and appreciation for our women, show the beauty in vulnerability from a man and give the world some damn good music. Just Listen!”
