Picture this: you’re minding your business, driving down the road in your car and you suddenly see red and blue lights flashing in your rearview mirror. You pull over, probably already shuffling around for your driver’s license and registration while backtracking your last road moves to figure out which illegal one you made, and a police officer makes his way to your driver’s door. You ask the infamous six words: “Why am I being stopped, officer?” only to learn that he just wanted to say, “Hi.”

This scenario became soulstress legend Erykah Badu’s reality in Texas when she was stopped by Dallas police with her 13-year-old daughter, Puma, in the passenger seat. But, since she’s posted the seemingly innocent run-in to Instagram, there’s been a bit of controversy on how harmless the encounter actually was.

  1. Erykah let the police explain to the camera why they pulled her over, which sent her bursting into laughter

  2. She was totally fine with it though, joking that they might get fired for the traffic stop, but insisting to the Dallas Police Department that they don’t…
  3. Some fans, on the other hand, didn’t find the joke in it at all, and discovered what they deemed abuse of power from the superfan officers instead
