Since his celebratory early prison release, MMG heavyweight Meek Mill has been using his hip-hop platform for powerfully noble causes related to criminal justice and prison reform and the conversations surrounding them.
For the 2018 BET Awards, he elevated that dialogue with a compelling performance of his first new single of the year, “Stay Woke” with R&B star Miguel. Meek transformed the stage at L.A.’s Microsoft Theater to the vicious streets of his Philly home turf, depicting the realism of a burdened community including police brutality, poverty and gun violence. In, perhaps, the most stirring scene, a mother rushes to the slain body of her child after cops fire a pistol that ends the life of the young girl as she played amongst a crew of other children playing on the street corner.
The Wins & Losses rapper also made a sentimental choice of wardrobe for the performance, eulogizing the lives of recently fallen rap stars XXXTentacion and Jimmy Wopo with portraits on the front and back of his hoodie.
The performance brought forth many emotions from viewers, and fans all across the internet raised their fist, candles and prayer hands for Meek's moving statement.
