On Friday (Aug. 24), a founding member of the Geto Boys, DJ Ready Red, reportedly has died from an apparent heart attack at his home in New Jersey.
The New Jersey native, whose birth name was Collins Leysath, was 53.
Fellow Geto Boys member, Willie D shared the sad news via an Instagram video.
“DJ Ready Red died today of an apparent heart attack,” Willie D regrettably announced. “Red was the Geto Boys’ first DJ and producer, he gave us our sound.”
He then went on to share that the “Musical Enforcer,” was responsible for “most of the production,” in the early days of the group.
“To say that he was a pioneer would be an understatement,” he continued before adding, “Red was before his time. There’s a lot of producers today that are eating off of Red and don’t even know why their bellies are full.”
For those who don’t know, the groups biggest hit was 1991 “Mind Playing Tricks on Me.”
BET extends its deepest love, prayers, and light to the Leysath family at this time.
