Dreamville leader and North Carolina rap icon J. Cole was among the dozens who expressed grief and condolences amid the untimely death of hip-hop’s beloved Mac Miller, who passed away from a reported drug overdose on Friday (September 7).

Cole tweeted his support and an ear to lend for anyone else in the industry struggling from addiction, feelings of abandonment, or simply in need of a friend in honor of the fallen 26-year-old. Upon arriving in Las Vegas on the KOD Tour stop, Cole took another opportunity to pay even further homage. And with it, the “ATM” rapper shared heartfelt words on behalf of Mac’s legacy and shed a few tears in mourning of the already dearly missed Malcolm James McCormick.

  1. A fan captured Cole’s tearful sentiments from the audience

As he spoke on the “root of all evil,” with the instrumental of his “ATM” hit stringing away in the background, a tear falls from Cole’s eye. Another fan captured more of his ode, as he discussed the growing pains of all the 20-somethings out there.

“As you grow up, you go through some traumatic sh**,” he said. Cole went into the devastating realities most of us encounter even before the age of 20, and some of the toxic escapes people have used to cope with those accumulated realities. He’s forcing himself into the face of that baggage now, the 33-year-old said.

“And sometimes we need reminders to get ourselves back on track—it’s ok to get off track—but sometimes, we need a reminder to help us get back on,” Cole continued before segueing into his gentle “Love Yourz” ballad of 2014 Forest Hills Drive. “I got this song right now I wanna do for y’all, It’s my favorite song I ever did. I wanna do it for y’all…I need y’all to put y’all f**king cellphones in the sky right now for my n**ga Mac Miller—we gon do this whole song for him. This whole show is for him.”

  2. And just as Cole wept for his late friend in rap, so did the rest of the internet…
