XXXTentacion Won A Best R&B/Soul Album Award – And Fans Are Torn

"I understand why, but let's be real..."

Florida-bred emcee XXXTentacion's debut album,17, beat out SZA's CTRL and Khalid's American Teen for Best R&B/Soul Album, posthumously, at the 2018 American Music Awards this past Tuesday night (Oct. 9).

Despite many labeling the LP as a hip-hop/rap album, according to famed lyric-deciphering site Genius, the album isn't for those looking for "hype" style of music. Instead, 17 is for "the ones with depression, the lost ones."

  • Many praised the slain rapper for winning the award and continued to honor his legacy.

  • Yet, there were still a few who were torn with his win.

  • His mother, Cleopatra Bernard, accepted the award on his behalf and thanked his fans for making it possible.

Since the rapper's tragic murder in June, the melancholic album reentered Billboard charts, thus bringing a new wave of praise to his hits "SAD!," "Moonlight" and "changes." It was also recently announced that XXX won Best New Artist at the 2018 BET Hip-Hop Awards, airing on October 16.
