Just a few weeks after facing backlash from a few of his industry peers with his “strippers rapping” comments, Jermaine Dupri is yet again making headlines. He has rubbed a few fans the wrong way after he seemingly disparaged Lil Nas X’s song “Old Town Road,” which was crowned the longest charting single in Billboard’s history after it outpaced Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s longest 16-week chart run with their classic ballad “One Sweet Day.”
While Mimi warmly welcomed Lil Nas X into the ranks of history, Jermaine seemed to push back against his fellow Atlanta native encroaching on the R&B goddess' legacy on Twitter.
“No!! You can’t sit with us,” he wrote. “Go sit over there, and based on the stats and this chart, @mariahcarey is the greatest songwriter in history,” the super producer proclaimed, posting a screenshot from Billboard Charts official Twitter account highlighting which songs have historically spent the most weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100.
Fans felt his remark was a snub toward Lil Nas and gatekeeping against the new generation of stars defining the industry. However, Jermaine said his words had been mischaracterized.
He hopped back on Twitter two hours later saying he wasn’t shading Lil Nas’ accomplishment.
“Why y’all think I’m talking to him? Stop making s**t up. He’s on the list and he from Atlanta. I’m [talking] to all the niggas that discredit me. This list is the biggest songs in history and I’m on it!!,” Jermaine hit back. “Nigga mad when I brag about the stats I got. But I'm used to not having a lot.”
