Fans have starved for new Rihanna music for so long that many had given up hope that the Barbadian songstress-turned-entrepreneur was done with music for good. To their surprise, the 31-year-old made a rare return to the stage at her 5th annual Diamond Ball in New York on Thursday night (Sept. 12). Just when it seemed that all hope was lost of Rih ever gracing us again with her vocals on an official record, clips from inside the extravaganza have restored fans' faith that the pop star hasn’t moved on from music.
Ahead of the event, the Barbados native subtly dropped a hint that she had something up her sleeve.
“Me and @jennnrosales tonight when @Pharrell hits the stage... and @djkhaled gon turn the function up sumn serious....,” she tweeted hours before the Diamond Ball alongside a video of a little girl shimmying to Pharrell’s classic, “Beautiful.”
But she pulled a move that nobody was expecting. As Pharrell was holding down the stage as the gala’s headliner, the R&B crooner surprised everyone by popping up with him mid-performance for their joint single effort of 2017, “Lemon.” Perfectly staged in her element, the songstress showed that she still knows how to put on a show while commanding every inch of the stage.
While it’s not a full-on official return, everyone has been direly thirsting for this moment since the last time we saw RiRi perform: her sizzling DJ Khaled-produced Wild Thoughts collaboration with Bryson Tiller at the 2018 Grammys. Needless to say, seeing Rih back on stage not only took the Navy to a whole new level, but persuaded them that a musical return is pretty much imminent.
News recently dropped that the Anti hitmaker’s next era is nearly upon us — if insider’s reports are on the money. It’s also worth noting that back in June, the mogul teased fans of new music with a behind-the-scenes look at her in the studio.
Now, the Navy is crying tears of joy while gathering every inch of their lives to their leader’s performance. While we still await her ninth studio release, let this video of Rihanna performing with Pharrell bless your eyes, and check out the best fan reactions to the news.
