Kanye West is taking his Sunday Service choir to more new heights.
The New York Daily News reports that Kanye will headline an upcoming 10-hour long prayer rally called Awaken 2020 this weekend on Saturday (Jan. 18). The organizers of the event shared the surprise announcement on their official Instagram page last week.
As we all know, Ye has been serious about his latest spiritual transformation following his evangelical reawakening as embodied through his Jesus Is King album, vowing that he will no longer perform secular music. His transition hasn’t come without its controversy, however, and this recent move is no exception.
According to a rundown of the Awaken 2020’s lineup, conducted by the NY Daily News, the speaking panel includes a number of prominent, but controversial, religious leaders that have previously espoused anti-LGBTQ views. One example includes Miami-based pastor Guillermo Maldonado, who believes homosexuality “invites unclean spirits into our lives,” according the outlet,” and is listed as a speaker on the event’s website.
For further context as to what the spiritual gathering will entail, Awaken 2020’s website proclaims: “This January 18th, 2020 at Sun Devil Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona, it’s time for you to be part of the Jesus awakening that is shifting HISTORY.”
The announcement continued: “Open the door and enter into a new era, a new decade, of revival that is bringing a movement of signs and wonders, healing of the sick, and preaching of the gospel.”
Awaken 2020 is set to take place on Saturday (Jan. 18) and is coined as the “first epic evangelical stadium event of the decade,” according to the publication. The spectacle will reportedly take place at the at the Sun Devil Stadium in Phoenix.
