Tinashe Says She Felt Like She Was Pitted Against “Every Black Girl” Doing R&B At One Point
In November of 2019, R&B’s Tinashe released her latest project, Songs For You, to mark her newfound sense of independence after parting ways with her entire team at RCA. Most recently, the R&B songstress was on E! News’ podcast Just the Sip where she spoke on her journey in the music industry and what sparked her desire to take the leap of faith. While speaking to the host of Just the Sip, the 27-year-old recalled how she felt like she was pitted against “every Black girl” making R&B music at one point.
"First, it was the superstars, which was like, whoa, an honor,” she said. “But like, how are you guys gonna pit me against these people? It would be, Tinashe, the new Aaliyah [or] Tinashe, the next Beyoncé. I would be like, ‘you guys are setting me up left and right. These people are icons.’"
After that, Tinashe said that she just started being compared to other women artists that had a similar style and look.
“I literally could name six different people at one point...Tinashe versus Jhené [Aiko], Tinashe versus FKA Twigs, Tinashe versus...all the R&B girls. Literally any Black girl...Cassie. All the 'whisper' singers, whatever that means."
Elsewhere in the interview, Tinashe shared that she does not have any regrets over publicly stating how she felt after she and Philadelphia 76ers point guard Ben Simmons broke up.
“That was a big moment in life where I had a pause in general. It put a spotlight on the other relationships in my life that I didn’t feel were fulfilling me,” she explained.
