Johnniqua Charles, the woman behind the viral “Lose Yo Job” video, says her life has been transformed because of the minute-long video.
“I’m just overwhelmed, and I’m such a humble person [that] to see that, it’s just amazing to me,” Charles told BuzzFeed News. “I’m just glad that it’s something so positive.”Charles shared that she was homeless, dealing with a drug addiction, and hadn’t spoken to her family since November until the video brought them back together.
“I’d been on the streets, and they’d been looking for me,” she said. “And I guess they [saw] that this video could basically change my life, and they put out a whole search party to find me.”
Charles and her sister, Andrea, have since set up a GoFundMe page, which has raised over $50,000K thus far, and are selling T-shirts with her infamous remarks emblazoned on the front so that she can support herself and her three-year-old son, JuJu.
The video resulted after Charles got into an argument with a security officer his after she attempted to go back into a club after it was closed to retrieve a purse she had accidentally left behind.
“Why are you detaining me? You about to lose yo’ job,” Charles can be heard saying in the video before she then breaks into song and dance. “You about to lose yo job. You about to lose yo job. Get this dance! You about to lose yo job ‘cause you are detaining me for nothing.”
The security officer in question didn’t lose his job but the exchange was later turned into a remix by several DJs, including a rendition by DJ Suede the Remix God and iMarkkeyz, who also remixed Cardi B’s hilarious coronavirus comments in March.
“Other people keep telling me I helped them so much,” Charles said later in the interview. “But they don’t understand — nobody understands — how much this video going viral like this is helping me, because it’s giving me the breakthrough I so badly needed for so long.”
