BET.com gives props to ladies creating their own sound.

Giving Credit Where It's Due - It’s no secret that music production is a man’s world. The talented women behind the boards mixing, mastering, arranging and composing the R&B and hip hop hits we love, rarely receive the props they deserve. BET.com gives credit where it’s due to female producers –– from vets like Missy Elliott, who just celebrated a birthday (July 1) and lit up the 2014 BET Awards stage with her V.A. boardsmith brethren Pharrell, to the newcomers like WundaGurl, who got her first big break with none other than Jay Z. WondaGurl - WondaGurl had a sweet 16 in 2013 when rapper/producer Travi$ Scott told her her "Crown" beat would be included on Jay Z's Magna Carta... Holy Grail. Crystal Caines - Meet Crystal Caines. The Harlem-born newcomer is a triple threat: songwriter, producer and engineer. Caines made a buzz after lacing A$AP Ferg with a trippy bass-style beat for "100 Million Roses." Ferg later tapped Caines again for his Trap Lord track "Lord," featuring rap veterans Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. With her foot in the door on a Top 10 album, Caines can only go up from here. Syd Tha Kyd - L.A. native Syd Tha Kyd was born into music, as her mother aspired to be a DJ and her Jamaican father was a reggae producer. At 14, she built a recording studio in her house. Syd rose to fame as producer of the Odd Future sub-group The Internet. She was also the lead producer of Mac Miller's Live From Space (2013). The pompadour-rocking entertainer has numerous production credits: as arranger on her debut, The ArchAndroid (2010); as the executive producer, songwriter and engineer on her follow-up, The Electric Lady, and for playing the hammon organ on her 2007 EP, Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase). Erykah Badu - Soulquarian Erykah Badu is a veteran in R&B, but her skills go beyond her jazzy, soulful vocal ability. The Dallas native has production credits for keyboards on her debut album Baduizm (1997); drum programming, arranging, engineering and art direction on Worldwide Underground (2003), New Amerykah Part One (4th World War) (2008) and on New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh) (2010). You can also find Badu occassionally spinning records at parties under the moniker DJ Low Down Loretta Brown.  (Photo: WENN)
