2023 NAACP Image Awards: 3 Award-Winning Movies to Add to Your Next Watch Party

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ was crowned this year’s ‘Outstanding Motion Picture.’

The NAACP Image Awards honors the most prominent and brightest stars and projects from Black Hollywood. This year’s winners included female warriors, a non-binary strip club owner, a Black Panther, and many more. In honor of this year’s celebration hosted by actress and producer Queen Latifah, check out three movies you should add to your watch party list.

  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

    There’s also a surprise appearance you’ll be shocked to see. This year the film led the ceremony with 14 nominations, ultimately winning the “Outstanding Motion Picture” award accepted by director Ryan Coogler.

  • Woman King

    EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) winner Viola Davis rightfully earned the “Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture '' for her role in the Woman King.  The historical drama features an all-Black, predominantly female cast and tons of action, making it great for a girl’s night in.

    During her acceptance speech, the actress referred to a powerful quote in the movie, where her character, Nanisca, says, “Sorry I left you, I wasn’t brave enough.” “I never want to not be brave enough,” she continued. “As a woman, as a Black woman, as an artist. And I thank everyone who was involved in The Woman King because that was just nothing but high-octane bravery.”

  • Emancipation

    Emancipation loosely tells the powerful story of an enslaved man named Whipped Peter, portrayed by actor Will Smith, who flees a plantation in Louisiana after being nearly beaten to death. Smith earned  “Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture” for his performance, making it his first major award win since his Oscars fallout in March 2022
