Viola Davis Launches Production Company

Viola Davis Launches Production Company

Actress secures HBO development deal.

Published August 5, 2011

In a new Time magazine profile, it was revealed that The Help’s Viola Davis has launched a production company to help expand the options for Black actors. The Time writer lamented over the Academy Award-nominated actress being typically relegated to supporting roles—arguing that it’s unfair to an actress with her level of talent. The writer asserted, Viola “keeps playing intense, downtrodden, decidedly unsexy characters.”

As for the progress of Davis’ production company, which was launched with her husband, Julius Tennon, it seems to already be well on its way to success. Time reports: “She also has an HBO development deal for a program about a headmaster at a San Francisco private school.” Producer Margaret Nagle says of the role, "This character does bad things for all the right reasons.” She added, “When I told Viola that, she was like, ‘I’m there.’ Another actor would say, ‘It’s really important to me that she be likable.’”
