Was that the sound of hell freezing over? Must be, because MTV seems to finally be ditching the Lauren Conrad prototypes and is backing a reality show starring a young woman, Chelsea Settles, who looks a little more like the average woman (if the average woman were lucky enough to look like Jill Scott).
The network will debut a new reality series in October featuring a familiar premise — girl moves to a big city to pursue fashion — but the star has at least one unique quality that sets her apart from her buff and blond predecessors: she weighs 324 lbs.
The network describes Settles, 23, as "a new kind of MTV heroine.” The show will follow the recent college grad as she arrives in Los Angeles from a small town near Pittsburgh, and will chronicle issues like her long-distance boyfriend, social phobias and weight loss.
The series appears to be taking the best elements from reality dramas like The Hills and weight loss programs like “I Used to be Fat” or “The Biggest Loser.”
Chelsea Settles premieres with a special hour-long episode on Oct. 11 at 11:00 p.m ET.
