Her wedding was the subject of a highly rated TLC special last June, and now Niecy Nash is inviting the network’s cameras into her life for the sequel, Leave It to Niecy, a reality “docu-series” that follows her life with her three kids and new husband Jay Tucker. “You get to see the side of me that’s a mother, the side of me that’s a wife. It’s my goal to get this family together, and cameras just happen to be along for the ride,” says Nash, noting that the show works around her schedule and the activities of teenagers Dominic, Donielle and pre-teen Dia.
Reality TV shows have historically put a strain on relationships, but Nash wasn’t concerned. “We understand exactly what we’re doing. We went in eyes wide open because we’re really, really solid. I want people to see that it’s sweet and it’s good and it’s real. It’s not perfect but it’s fun. I ain’t saying that we got it all figured out, but we’re trying!” she laughs.
Nash and Tucker, an electrical engineer, met on September 4, 2009, and had their first date a week later. “It wasn’t love at first sight. I had to work my mojo on him,” she confides. They married Memorial Day weekend of 2011. “Holidays keep it easy,” she notes. “And there’s always a reason to celebrate,” Tucker adds.
For Nash, love is definitely better the second time around. “My first marriage lasted 16 years, and that compared to this was the appetizer. I'm on my main course right now, and it's so good, and I'm so groomed. We're both so seasoned that we're enjoying this part of it,” she says. “I feel that through this relationship, I’ve shown my children what real love looks like up close. I feel like that’s the best gift I could give them, I want people to know you can get a do‑over. I'm not a perfect mom, but I'm perfect for my kids. And I'm perfect for this man right here.”
Tucker says the relationship works because they balance each other. “She’s over the top, I’m under the radar. We have a great communication and a great foundation of love. I just enjoy spending time with her and growing and blending our families together.”
This June, Nash will have a different, fictional television husband: she’ll play Cedric the Entertainer’s wife in the TV Land sitcom Have Faith. They previously worked together in Code Name: The Cleaner. She’s also writing a new book “about love and it’s about relationships, second chances and inviting people to think a little bit differently when it comes to love.”
Leave It to Niecy premieres on TLC on March 25 at 10 p.m.
