The theatrical rights to the documentary Free Angela and All Political Prisoners has been acquired by Codeblack Films. Last year, the film about Angela Davis premiered at the Toronto Film Festival to rave reviews.

Written and directed by Shola Lynch, Free Angela tells the journey of how the young college professor, who was member of the Communist Party and an associate of the Black Panther Party, landed on the FBI’s ten most wanted list and became one of America’s most renowned revolutionaries. The film, which will be presented by BET Networks, will be released exclusively in select AMC theaters in Washington D.C., Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Oakland, Philadelphia and Atlanta on April 5, 2013.

“We knew that this film was important and would not only shed a spotlight on history, but provide a flashlight for our future,” said Jeff Clanagan, CEO of Codeblack Enterprises in a statement. “Angela Davis is a staple in history and continues to cross generational and cultural lines in her plight to fight for the freedom of all people.” The executive producers for Free Angela are Jay-Z's Roc Nation and Will Smith's Overbrook Entertainment. is your #1 source for Black celebrity news, photos, exclusive videos and all the latest in the world of hip hop and R&B music.
