After a stellar opening weekend for heist comedy Identity Thief, Hollywood insiders are predicting a star is born.

Melissa McCarthy, who gained considerable buzz after her Oscar-nominated performance in Bridesmaids (she lost to BFF Octavia Spencer), seems to have officially joined the ranks of the A-list after Identity Thief opened at the top of the box office, with a whopping $36.6 million in ticket sales. Even winter storm Nemo, which shut down much of the East Coast, couldn't stop the film from flying past expectations and scoring a first place finish.

The film, about an imbalanced woman who steals the identity of a business man, forging an unlikely bond between the pair, also stars Jason Bateman and T.I.

Last week's winner Warm Bodies slipped to second place but still scored a respectable $11.5 million, and Steven Soderbergh's thriller Side Effects, starring his Magic Mike muse Channing Tatum, took third with an even $10 million. The rest of the top ten continues to be dominated by Oscar contenders, including frontrunner Lincoln and dark horse Django Unchained

Next week, Viola Davis' Beautiful Creatures, Bruce Willis' A Good Day to Die Hard and Nicholas Sparks' latest adaptation Safe Haven will vie for spots in the top three. Will any of them be able to slow down Identity Thief?
