After weeks of strong showings, the box office went out with a whimper this weekend. Jack the Giant Slayer nabbed the top spot, but the film's $28 million in ticket sales was nothing short of a disaster considering its $300 million budget.
Identity Thief, starring Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman, stayed strong at number two and became the first film of the year to cross the $100 million mark. The heist comedy, which also stars T.I. and Morris Chestnut, continues a hugely surprising run with no real competition in sight.
Rounding out the top five are 21 and Over, The Last Exorcism II and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Snitch. Once again, The Silver Linings Playbook is the only Oscar nominee to hold on to a spot in the top ten.
Next week, family-friendly Oz the Great and Powerful is expected to take the last wind out of Jack's sails while Terrence Howard's Dead Man Down will attempt to lure in adult audiences.
