Box Office: Fast 6 Stays on Top, After Earth Crashes

Will and Jaden Smith's action flick failed to top the box office.

Fast and Furious 6 left behind a scorched Earth at the box office this weekend.

The latest installment of the racing franchise easily held on to the top spot, beating out Will Smith and Jaden Smith's After Earth. The action sci-fi flick debuted at a very disappointing third place, behind magician drama Now You See Me, starring Morgan Freeman and Mark Ruffalo. The lackluster performance has some questioning how long Will Smith can hold on to his crown as Hollywood's premiere action star, and if his teenage son Jaden is up to the task of taking it over.

After Earth took in $27 million in ticket sales, just a fraction of its $130 million budget. Compared to Fast 6's $34.5 million, it was clear it wasn't even a close race for first place.

The Hangover Part III topped the foreign box office again, with another $82.3 million in sales. That brings the comedy three-quel's total receipts to just shy of the half-billion mark.

Next week, Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson bring the funny to town with The Internship, and Shakespeare tries his luck against summer blockbusters with a modernization of Much Ado About Nothing.
